Understanding Processor Terminology

In an age where computers are advancing at an almost exponential rate, it is almost impossible to stay up to speed on the latest technologies unless you are in the sector of business that is creating them. There are also a large number of terms related to processors that are helpful to know and understand. Learning these terms is beneficial especially when you are looking to build a new computer or upgrade your system.
Some important terms to know
Start with processors. The term "processor" is a shortened version of the full name "central processing unit." The central processing unit, or CPU, is composed of many different "microprocessors." If the CPU is known as the brain of the computer, microprocessors are most easily thought of as the cells that make up the brain. Terms such as "dual-," "tri-" or "quad-core" processors refer to the number of processors that make up the CPU. You may see speeds listed in reference to processors. This is known as the clock rate and is measured in either mega- or gigahertz.
Learning important terminology related to processors is very helpful when you are in the market for an upgrade or a replacement. It is not hard to learn these terms, and there is always more information available online; simply start with Google or Bing to learn virtually anything else you want to know about processors, terms related to understanding them or even the installation process.
